About RTS

Regional Technology Strategies (RTS), a nonprofit 501(c) 3 organization based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, crafts and implements strategies to produce regional competitive advantage that generates higher wage jobs for all income levels that are driven by talented creative people and innovative indigenous assets. The RTS focus extends beyond the plan itself to actually making the plan a reality. Our goal is impact. Impact as exemplified by our work to design and implement a grant program to bolster the badly damaged research capacity on Katrina-impacted campuses in the New Orleans area by matching R&D capacity with private sector strengths, our work in Montana that converted our bioscience cluster development plan into the thriving Montana BioScience Alliance, or our work in central Louisiana to establish in downtown Alexandria a comprehensive community and technical college.

Who We Are

The RTS team combines academic, non-profit, and private sector backgrounds, with widely recognized national and international credentials in crafting economic development and workforce development strategies for public, private partnerships and nonprofit clients and strong in-the-trenches experience managing economic development oriented organizations and agencies.

We’re Different

What makes RTS distinct is its understanding of the synergies among university-based assets, regional competitive advantages generated by existing and emerging clusters, workforce skills and know-how and regional economic development collaborative cultures and networks. It uses this understanding to help regions craft and deliver economic development services that create wealth in their communities, help grow existing companies, and make regions attractive locations for new and expanding ventures.

The CommonWeal & RTS Partnership

The CommonWeal/RTS Partnership merges deep expertise and international experience in cluster development strategies and implementation planning, regional science, technology and innovation strategy development, and identifying, analyzing and deploying firm-to-firm networks formed by serial entrepreneurs and investors to drive value creation within innovation ecosystems. The two Principals that lead CommonWeal, LLC and RTS, Inc. have worked together in research and strategy planning endeavors for fifteen years.
